<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-049tyh9zqAE/T2ie929DTII/AAAAAAAAANQ/XqLPz2AZnH8/s1600/images.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-049tyh9zqAE/T2ie929DTII/AAAAAAAAANQ/XqLPz2AZnH8/s320/images.jpeg" width="272" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Keep calm and tweet on!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>So you're about to graduate or are still looking for that "dream job" and you need an edge. Your resume could use some beefing up but you can't justify adding "Facebook creeper" to your "Skills" section. Just when you thought that your blogging rants were perhaps a waste of time, think again...social media just might be your ticket to paradise, or at least employment.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Over the past few weeks we've been pretty busy at the office. Our data entry skills have been refined and our perky 9 a.m. phone greetings have been perfected. With our morning joe in hand, everything is going swimmingly, until there's a social media gaffe and we start wishing that everyone was as savvy as we pretend to be. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">With that, we can only predict (with side of wishful thinking), how successful <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">you'll</span> be after you pick up "Blogger for Dummies", but its becoming increasingly clear that social media is the way of the future. You may not realize it, but your ability to access your world through virtual means might actually pay off someday. Especially if you know how to do it right. Here are a few of our favorite tips from the blogosphere that can enhance your social media game:</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">1.) <u>Do something socially constructive.</u> (<a href="http://www.black-collegian.com/issues/1stsem05/marketable2005-1st.shtml" target="_blank">The Black Collegian</a>): Don't be afraid to kill your time on the unemployment line by volunteering. Community service speaks to non-profits and start-ups that need malleable individuals who do good. By taking advantage and getting involved in your community, you're building material to blog or tweet about that builds your resume for you!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">2.) <u>Identify the tools to suit your needs.</u> (<a href="http://www.prdaily.com/Main/Articles/6_social_media_tools_for_job_seekers_9132.aspx" target="_blank">PR Daily</a>): Be aware of the platforms you use and their intended purposes. Many social media environments can be manipulated to serve in a variety of ways but be weary of posting status updates on professional sites like LinkedIn the way you would on Twitter. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">3.) <u>Keep close tabs on your pages.</u> (<a href="http://www.businessnewsdaily.com/2118-social-media-mistakes.html" target="_blank">Business News Daily</a>): Nothing is worse than losing control of your pages. Keep the number of profiles you manage to a responsible minimum and update them regularly. Information (especially pictures) that are outdated, discredit the owner's ability to successfully coordinate multiple tasks and ultimately speaks to your organization. Also, watch the comments of your followers. Crude or offensive remarks might turn your page into a red flag for potential employers.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">4.) <u>Know how you compare.</u> (<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/megan-berry/job-hunting-social-media_b_1366055.html" target="_blank">The Huffington Post</a>): When it comes to real-life acquaintances, it's always better to believe in quality over quantity. Over the internet however, the number of friends or followers is what distinguishes successful users from their lackluster counterparts. Figure out what other people like you are doing or posting to gain traffic to their sites and follow their lead. Imitation is the finest form of flattery, right?</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZLAk7SRJ1BI/T2ifZOErtyI/AAAAAAAAANY/YINlSD8_734/s1600/images-1.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZLAk7SRJ1BI/T2ifZOErtyI/AAAAAAAAANY/YINlSD8_734/s1600/images-1.jpeg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">If this looks overwhelming, <br />
welcome to the big leagues!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>5.) <u>Leverage your network.</u> (<a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/sap/2011/12/22/2012-job-market-5-tips-for-using-social-media-to-find-a-new-job/" target="_blank">Forbes</a>): If you're connect to a Blogspot account of someone who works in an industry you're trying to break into, ask them for advice. Facebook messages are another good way to reach out to people you admire. Don't forget to keep it professional and to not take it personally if you don't get a response. Advertising that you're actively job searching and have particular skills will also put you on employers' radar so joining LinkedIn professional groups is another good way to activate friends who can keep an eye out for you. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">6.) <u>Maintain a smart online profile.</u> (<a href="http://career-advice.monster.com/job-search/getting-started/8-ways-to-make-yourself-more-marketable-hot-jobs/article.aspx" target="_blank">Monster.com</a>): Kegstands might have been cool when you were involved in Greek life but now you're actively engaged in a job search and you'd rather be safely on your feet than with your life (literally) turned upside down. If you take pride in being successful, its probably time to untag and delete those pictures that aren't so flattering to your character. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">7.) <u>Network wisely.</u> (<a href="http://www.black-collegian.com/issues/1stsem05/marketable2005-1st.shtml" target="_blank">The Black Collegian</a>): The best jobs are not always advertised in newspapers. This means that activating fellow majors in your alumni association, people who are career liaisons or college professors is a an integral part of your professional "attack plan". The more people who know you and can speak on your behalf to potential employers, the better!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">8.) <u>See yourself as an editor of your own suite of magazine.</u> (<a href="http://careers.guardian.co.uk/social-media-job-seeking" target="_blank">The Guardian</a>): We love our Tumblr, Twitter, Wordpress, Facebook and LinkedIn accounts as much as the next crop of social media mavens but there is a time and a place for everything and you can see the difference if you've found us on other platforms. Before you experiment with a new account, or think of re-purposing an old one, consider the functionality of the site and how you can make it work for you. If your Flickr is filled with vacation pictures then maybe its time to set the settings to private so that your future CEO isn't scrolling through pictures of you in a bikini (or worse, with a Spring Break sunburn)!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">9.) <u>Start a website/ blog.</u> (<a href="http://mashable.com/2009/01/13/social-media-resume/" target="_blank">Mashable Business</a>): Take our advice and get passionate about something. For us, its a little bit of everything but there's a method to our madness. We don't average just under 700 hits a month for lack of trying so figure out what it is that makes you tick and get writing! The upside to this tip is that writing skills are invaluable and the more articulate you are about your passions, the more intriguing you become .</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">10.) <u>Use your name as your brand, especially in e-mail.</u> (<a href="http://career-advice.monster.com/job-search/getting-started/8-ways-to-make-yourself-more-marketable-hot-jobs/article.aspx" target="_blank">Monster.com</a>): It was cute in middle school but Pinkcutiexoxo@whatever.com isn't going to be eye-catching quite the same way a pink scented resume might be (see <i>Legally Blonde</i>). Keeping names consistent on your resume makes things easy and memorable for whoever is reading it. Also, if playing basketball isn't part of your desired job description, we suggest keeping any reference to a username including the word "hoopz" off the document as well.</div></div><i><br />
</i><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">Now that we've written the check-list, grab your favorite pen and start crossing out these steps. And don't forget to let us know how it works out for you! </div><div style="text-align: center;">Good luck!</div></div>Vanessahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04984270566447798533noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6506138618857433987.post-14727034829259653012012-03-08T11:35:00.000-08:002012-03-08T11:35:22.190-08:002012: The Year of Kony<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

As the thirty minute video progresses, experiences ranging from first sounds to the dissemination of political uprisings capture what it is to be engaged in society.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">If you've watched this video, or any footage from Invisible Children, you already know that its not only the quantity of life that should be of great interest but the quality. In Uganda (and other states where the Lord's Resistance Army, known as the L.R.A., has crossed borders to spread their terrorism), Joseph Kony, a rebel guerrilla leader and number nine on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_World%27s_10_Most_Wanted" target="_blank">the world's Top 10 Most Wanted</a> fugitives, is running rampant. His extremist ideals are rooted in the Christian Ten Commandments and his campaign involves strategies including <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_Commandments#Two_texts_with_numbering_schemes" target="_blank">murder</a>, mutilation, rape and cannibalism.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">What's wrong with this picture?</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div style="text-align: center;">Thanks to Invisible Children, the time to "do more than just watch"has come. The mission of three young filmmakers in 2003 has exploded into a global movement. College campuses across the United States have witnessed the atrocities committed by Joseph Kony and his followers, including (but not limited to) his practices involving the forceful recruitment of child soldiers. Nine years ago, Bobby Bailey, Laren Poole and Jason Russell "stumbled" upon this war and have since created Invisible Children Inc. as a non-profit and informative resource to educate others and work to stop Joseph Kony through various media outlets.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">As of today (March 8, 2012), the "Kony 2012" video has over 12.1 million views on Viemo and 37 million on YouTube. Along with a viral sweeping on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, celebrities such as Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Christina Milian and Nicki Minaj have endorsed the campaign. The message of this campaign, during a presidential election year that has been known for differing and controversial issues is that the eradication of the L.R.A. and its crimes is "something we can all agree on".</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This wasn't the only thing that <br />
made my Valentine's Day great!</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div style="text-align: center;">After college, there are many times when the term <b>"penny pinching"</b> is a gross overstatement. True friends will remind you that <i>you only live once</i>. Even truer friends will ask you to be their Valentine's Day date and enthusiastically encourage you to indulge yourself. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div><div style="text-align: center;">That's what I have my friend Megan for. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">With our S.O.V.S.' elsewhere on the planet, Megan and I organized for ourselves what would be the ultimate Valentine's Day...just for the two of us. We settled on sushi as our main event and selected the Back Bay locale known as <a href="http://bashosushi.com/" target="_blank">Basho Japanese Brasserie</a>. I coordinated our reservations and we settled on an 8:45 seating. Normally this would be unpleasantly late for me to be eating, but I knew Megan and I would pass the time with good conversation and some sort of adventure.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Megan, like me, enjoys a healthy tasting of beer every once in a while so it only seemed natural that we whet our appetites with some beverages at <a href="http://www.beerworks.net/home/index.html" target="_blank">Boston Beer Works</a> following our long days at the office. Megan met me at the Brookline Avenue location just a after 7 p.m. and we chose to sit at the bar. After we settled in, Megan informed me of a mini-sampling option they offer so that we could try a few different beers at once. When the bartender came to take our order, we instructed her to pick her three favorites from the menu and include the milk chocolate stout they were featuring. Once our "micro"-brews arrived, we began exploring the flavors of Bunker Hill blueberry ale, Landsdowne lager, Patriot pilsner and the milk chocolate stout. Pretty soon, we were lost in conversation and our beverages but ordered one round of full-sized beers before we crossed Yawkey Way where our dinner awaited us.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This is my valentine with our sampling of beers, from light to dark!</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div style="text-align: center;">Once inside Basho, we waited a mere five minutes to be seated. The lighting was dim with a pastel glow and Megan and I were seated towards the front of the restaurant by the windows which was both intimate and cozy. By this point, we were starving so everything on the menu enticed us. We settled on appetizers of gyoza and vegetable tempura (which we varied between sweet potato, avocado and cauliflower). Megan chose a Philadelphia roll as her dinner and I eagerly ordered my favorite, Spicy Tuna. Our cocktails came quickly which was excellent because I had been craving a lychee martini for some time. The service was friendly and attentive to clearing excess dishes. Even our dessert, a tart creme brûlée, was briskly whipped up and delivered to our table.</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

I applied for an account and within a few days was exploring the site and the catalog of images that were included. But that was a few months ago. Now, Pinterest has everything from pictures of dream destinations to inspirational quotes to <a href="http://www.someecards.com/" target="_blank">funny e-cards</a>. My sister, who is a social media hermit (with the exception of a fairly witty Twitter account), has been receiving a daily text message including a snapshot of a funny thing I find on the site. She doesn't seem to be enjoying it as much as the rest of the female population but if one thing's for certain, Pinterest is growing in fans with or without her.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Whitney Houston: 1963-2012</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div><div style="text-align: center;">In 1977, the world knew little of what would come of the 14 year old girl who performed as a back-up singer for Michael Zager's band. It wasn't until 1985 that her first single was even released. However, once Whitney Houston's name hit the airwaves she was no longer "just Whitney". This Jersey girl grew from background vocals to cover girl and recording artist to executive producer in an era where African American artists (especially women) were severely underestimated in American media. Whitney's contribution to American pop culture expanded much farther than her fashion missteps and personal challenges. In hindsight, Houston's 27 year career, which was often discredited by emotional turmoil, broke the boundaries pop culture had imposed on non-white talent and revolutionized the industry just as MTV was taking off.</div></div><div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div></div><div><div style="text-align: center;">Aside from her first single becoming a Top 5 R&B hit, Whitney Houston's early successes were numerous and noteworthy. As her name crooned through the airwaves, reviews by the New York Times quickly transitioned her fame from the exclusive R&B industry to more mainstream performances on late-night talk shows. Her third U.S. single, "How Will I Know", introduced her to the audience of MTV through the accompaniment of a music video. Shortly thereafter, she began to gain popularity and soon became the first African American, female artist to receive consistent rotation on MTV.</div></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div></div><div><div style="text-align: center;">The next few years were filled with week-long Billboard 200 chart hits and several American Music Awards. She also gained notoriety for her activism in support of Nelson Mandela and the anti-South African apartheid movement, refusing to do any modeling work with agencies that did businesses with South Africa. In 1989, Houston formed The Whitney Houston Foundation for Children, a non-profit that raised funds for the needs of children all over the world. Her global issues involvement continued following a critically acclaimed performance of the Star Spangled Banner at Superbowl XXV. When the track was later released as a commercial single, all proceeds went to the American Red Cross Gulf Crisis Fund gaining Houston praise and the recognition of being named to the Red Cross Board of Governors. The song was re-released following the September 11th attacks and proceeds were once again used for philanthropic purposes. </div></div></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div></div><div><div style="text-align: center;">Even her ventures onto the silver screen had an impact on pop culture. In Houston's first film, <i>The Bodyguard</i> (1992), she played a star seeking protection against a crazed fan alongside Kevin Costner. This film was especially significant because it did not address the interracial quality of the film. A Wikipedia description of this film perhaps described it best when it said, "Houston's mainstream appeal allowed people to look at the movie color-blind." Along with being hugely successful at the box office, The Bodyguard soundtrack inspired a lead single ("I Will Always Love You"), a world tour and a place on the Billboard top 100 for 14 consecutive weeks.</div></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div></div><div><div style="text-align: center;">In the years that followed, Whitney Houston's career was filled with significant moments. In 1995, she accepted a role to play TV producer Savannah Jackson in <i>Waiting to Exhale</i> because she saw the film as "a breakthrough for the image of black women because it presents them both as professionals and as caring mothers." This film was also successful and "proved that a movie primarily targeting a black audience, can cross over to success".</div></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div></div><div><div style="text-align: center;">Apart from her philanthropic efforts and unforgettable range, Whitney Houston's impact on the music industry will forever be her legacy. If Michael Jackson can be credited for breaking down the color barrier for black male artists, then Whitney Houston was his female counterpart. Recording artist Anita Baker has been quoted as saying, "Because of what Whitney...did, there was an opening for me...for radio stations, black women aren't taboo anymore." </div></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Apparently Isiah isn't the only one<br />
in support of equal marriage rights...</td></tr>
</tbody></table>If you're a current events junkie (or even just a social media fiend), there's no way you could ignore the buzz today when the 9th Circuit Court in California struck down the voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage. Celebs from Corey Monteith to Olivia Munn were literally a-twitter as the news broke across the country and throughtout various social media-spheres. In fact, today's ripple effect of support for equal marriage rights begged the question; if so many are in support, have the unsupportive lost their voice?<br />
<br />
Perhaps the most memorable quote in recent history surrounding this issue came forth today through the words of Judge Reinhardt who stated that, "Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples."<br />
<br />
On conservative website, <a href="http://truevalueexperience.org/2012/02/07/your-vote-doesnt-matter-prop-8/" target="_blank">Truevalueexperience.org</a>, writer Reid Guy suggested that since this issue is now going before the Supreme Court that, "the judges decisions could possibly change the landscape of America as we know it. This decision could go down in history as one of the most important since Roe v. Wade." Well, Dear Mr. Guy, we think so too.<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wgyi70rg36o/TzGy8bio9vI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/N6UeFylbuEk/s1600/l.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wgyi70rg36o/TzGy8bio9vI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/N6UeFylbuEk/s320/l.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Tara's "calling" out anyone who is standing in the way of gay marriage.</td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
But as monumental as this decision is, what changes will it bring with it? Obviously it will enable those who are gay or lesbian to participate in the institution of marriage much like their heterosexual counterparts but what about other social implications? Reid Guy said "the landscape of America" would change right?<br />
<br />
<b>Wrong.</b><br />
<br />
In case you haven't figured it out by now, you are either part of the American population that could run off <b>tomorrow</b> to get a marriage license <b>in any state</b> or you're not. You either identify as one sexual orientation or you don't. That isn't going to change. What will change is that every other American will have that opportunity too. Its not a crisis. In fact, its the opposite of a crisis.<br />
<br />
In Hillsborough County, Florida, the cost of a marriage license is $93.50. According to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wedding_industry_in_the_United_States" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>, there are approximately 2.5 million weddings a year in the United States. If just 25% of those weddings are between gay and lesbian couples, that's $58,437,500 in revenue a year! Economically speaking, equal marriage rights would be a smart decision for America but that's not the only reason Prop. 8 was rightfully overturned.<br />
<br />
With an economic boost and happy neighbors, society will soon see that allowing gay and lesbian couples to tie the knot is about as disastrous as allowing gays to serve in the military, sharing schools with students of a different skin color and permitting women to cast their votes in a ballot box. As history has shown, sometimes a little re-working is in order for us to progress as a civilization. Its time to recognize that the day is soon coming when "...one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of it's creed..."<br />
<br />
So we ask to those who are still in opposition, when it comes down to it, will it truly have a negative impact on your life? Does it really matter?<br />
<br />

</i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">It might still be February, but if that urge to pull out some spring-y accessories is cramming your closet, here are some strategies that might help minimize the stress!</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">If you're the type of nester that tends to get sentimental with lots of "things", the key thing to remember is that less is more when it comes to being organized. It might be hard to part with sticky notes that evoke a memory from a funny office conversation but if it's really necessary to keep, hide stacks of "things" under or behind <a href="http://www.realsimple.com/home-organizing/organizing/more-rooms/organized-home-00000000013879/page3.html" target="_blank">wire curtain panels</a> so that they're (prettily) out of the way and you can re-visit them later.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Brighten up your home workspace with <a href="http://www.hgtv.com/organizing/beautifully-organized-rooms-our-favorites-from-rate-my-space/pictures/index.html" target="_blank">colorful organizational tools</a> like boxes and file containers that are the same shade. The uniformity will add some method to your madness and will brighten the room and your disposition when you can easily access important items.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HIYFTLkLetw/TzANDzjl13I/AAAAAAAAAJs/zn2H5QPjTlQ/s1600/images.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HIYFTLkLetw/TzANDzjl13I/AAAAAAAAAJs/zn2H5QPjTlQ/s1600/images.jpeg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A place for everything and everything in its place!</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div style="text-align: center;">Start small. The mission of "clutter control" might just mean that you learn to eliminate the unnecessary paper build-up by the phone or the stack of receipts on your desk. <a href="http://www.simplify101.com/clutter-control.php" target="_blank">Take baby steps</a> to eliminate the clutter in the first place by finding ways that prevent you from getting lost in a mess in the first place!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Adding a feminine touch to your organization can be fun and creative! We loved <a href="http://www.marthastewart.com/340652/spring-organizing-tips/@center/276989/organizing" target="_blank">Martha Stewart's lattice shed board</a> for hanging tools. For the more advanced organizer, painting the lattice to match your door (or staining it so that it stands out) makes a cleaning project a fun, hands-on art project!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Lastly, find <a href="http://zenhabits.net/how-to-never-lose-a-thing-again/" target="_blank">a system for yourself</a>. If you know that doing something a certain way actually helps you to stay organized, then don't change it! The worst thing is re-learning where you put everything so stay simple and stress-free!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">If we had to pick our favorite song about an item in our closet, we'd probably have to go with the Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'". Little Miss Nancy was certainly stylin' in her mid-calf pleather little number that made her first single famous but in 2012 there's a new sheriff in town...<b>the ankle bootie</b>!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">You may have seen any number of designers with styles to be coveted. Our favorites tend to be black or grey and made of shiny or matte materials (much like the ones Gwenyth and Sienna are sporting on the left). As always, its good to have something versatile that can be dressed up or down and make you feel fabulous no matter what. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">As Nina Garcia states in her book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/One-Hundred-Guide-Pieces-Stylish/dp/0061664618" target="_blank">The One Hundred</a>, <i>"the ankle boot was originally intended to be hidden beneath classic trousers"</i> but lucky for us, street style existed long before <a href="http://www.tedpolhemus.com/main_concept6%20467.html" target="_blank">Ted Polhemus</a> and designers soon caught onto the notion that ankle boots with skirts, dresses and drainpipes (see below) was a revolutionary step!</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CK3RyYyHmlc/TynNkMmyzBI/AAAAAAAAAJM/uENqAMjPfnc/s1600/drain-pipe-trousers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CK3RyYyHmlc/TynNkMmyzBI/AAAAAAAAAJM/uENqAMjPfnc/s1600/drain-pipe-trousers.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Not your mother's drainpipe pants.</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">But speaking of dressing, are there fashion rules for these little guys? </div><div style="text-align: center;">Answer: <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Absolutely.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">If you haven't noticed by now, Nina Garcia's book is sort of like the bible to us. Here are the 5 commandments to ankle booties according to Nina:</div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><ol style="text-align: left;"><li>When wearing with pants, keep the colors the same. Black skinny pants tucked into booties will elongate the leg and make you feel fabulous.</li>
<li>When wearing with miniskirts, try them with black opaque tights to keep your line going and going. Unless you have fabulous legs, illusion is our master craft.</li>
<li>Make sure the bootie does not cut off straight at the ankle like a traditional bootie-these boots are made to be worn under pants and will chop off the leg and make it look stumpy.</li>
<li>It is a great alternative to the pump-always consider it if the pump seems too safe.</li>
<li>The bootie is a classic way to mix the masculine with the feminine, so don't be afraid to flaunt a little femininity when you have this more masculine shoe on. One must mix it to risk it...</li>
</ol><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">Speaking of risks, how do YOU step out in these fashion favorites? Got pics? Send them to COSMOpolitique@gmail.com, post them to our <a href="http://www.facebook.com/COSMOpolitique" target="_blank">Facebook fan page</a> or send us a Twitpic by following @COSMOpolitique</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</tbody></table><div style="text-align: left;">With the big game less than a week away, and many of you wishing it was the weekend again, we thought we'd get you day dreaming about where you might be once kickoff rolls around on Sunday.<br />
<br />
While many prefer the quaint and cozy party with family and friends, we realize that some socialites would rather be throwing one back with 40 of their closest friends (and neighbors) in the city.<br />
<br />
If you happen to be one of those party people, we applaud your skills as you balance a tortilla chip dripping with salsa and dodge shoulder bumps and thunderous cheering. Here are the best places to make it happen!</div></div><div style="text-align: left;"><ul style="text-align: left;"><li style="text-align: left;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Trina's Starlite</span></b>,<b style="font-size: x-large;"> </b><i>Inman Square</i>, Somerville: Named best neighborhood bar in 2011 and famous for their weekday brunches, fried chicken and sloppy joe's, <a href="http://trinastarlitelounge.com/index.html" target="_blank">this venue</a> is not to be missed! The cocktail menu has an equal playing field with all drinks being $9 and an intriguing selection of beers from High Life bottles to keg specialities like a Coffeehouse porter. They're open until 1 a.m. on game day so we suggest you give them a shot!</li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">The Bone</span></b>, <i>Downtown</i>, Framingham: If you're out in the 'burbs or just looking for a new spot, you should probably add this spot to your bucket list. <a href="http://www.thechickenbone.com/" target="_blank">Boasting</a> their award winning food and sports viewing on HDTV, The (Chicken) Bone also offers delivery of their 13 flavors if you've already scored a venue to watch the game. We know some like it hot but we'd recommend being cautious with the sauces!</li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">The Biltmore Bar & Grille</span></b>, <i>Upper Falls</i>, Newton: Originating as a speakeasy, <a href="http://www.thebiltmoregrill.com/content/about.html" target="_blank">this classy spot</a> is festive from its tin ceilings to its polished mahogany paneling. With local produce and dairy, The Biltmore earns a seal of approval from true New Englanders who have an appreciation for local flavors. Pull up at their salvaged tables and order oysters from the raw bar, sample proscuitto wrapped scallops or sip on creamy Yukon Gold potato soup as Brady and Manning duke it out!</li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><b>The Stockyard</b></span>, Brighton: After reading <a href="http://www.stockyardrestaurant.com/style.htm" target="_blank">the history of this place</a>, we were a little worried we'd be supporting the enemy, but never fear; Stockyard founder Corneilius Manning doesn't seem to have any common threads to the dastardly Eli. We were relieved because <a href="http://www.stockyardrestaurant.com/mainmenu.htm" target="_blank">the seared ahi tuna appetizer</a> seems too good to pass up! Of course, with traditional game day snacks like potato skins and mozzarella sticks, The Stockyard has plenty of screens and a vintage vibe that will getting you cheering to the leather heads of yore!</li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Ruth's Chris</span></b>, Boston: We too were skeptical when we read that this steakhouse is a Boston favorite for Superbowl viewing but like other city adventures, we just went with it! If you're compromising with a date on a Superbowl venue or romantic night out this weekend, this spot might be just the place to agree on. It surely has a <a href="http://www.ruthschris.com/Steak-House/4999/Boston" target="_blank">"warm, comfortable atmosphere"</a> and the bar recognizes Boston history through its namesake, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Michael_Curley" target="_blank">James Michael Curley</a>. It won't be open all hours of the night, which leaves plenty of time to barhop around Faneuil Hall or the Quincy Marketplace before locals starting singing "We are the Champions". (Knock on wood!)</li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><b>Game On</b></span>, <i>Fenway/ Landsdowne</i>, Boston: It wouldn't truly be a comprehensive list if this watering hole wasn't listed somewhere. If you've never been to the city, Game On is <a href="http://gameonboston.com/about/" target="_blank">one of the most popular sports bars neighboring Fenway Park</a>. As with many city bars, the Game On menu features everything from a raw bar to soups and savory chicken wings to (not so) simple salads. While there's still time, <a href="http://gameonboston.com/all-star-club/" target="_blank">sign-up for an All Star card</a> to ensure return visits greet you with V.I.P. status, discounts and other cool benefits. <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Would you miss out on a team invitation to the White House?</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div style="text-align: center;">Imagine accomplishing something and being invited to the White House to be acknowledged for it. Pretty awesome right? Apparently not awesome enough for Tim Thomas, goalie for the Boston Bruins who made a statement this week by not accepting the invitation extended to his entire team in recognition for winning the 2011 Stanley Cup. Since his refusal to attend, many Bruins fans have voiced their opinions regarding the champion goalie and whether or not politics has a place in sports.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">As a Bostonian, it's hard not to involve the two. With celebration banners hanging from our state house and parades of epic proportions through the streets where minutemen once trod when we bring home victory trophies, it seems like the two go hand in hand. Thomas, one of two Americans on the Bruins roster, could be defended with the argument that he was simply exercising his right to free speech. However, some fans believe that athletes should be role models and that perhaps Thomas should have done the gracious thing and accepted the President's invitation.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">In his statement, <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/tim-thomas-skips-white-house-visit-did-his-political-statement-backfire/2012/01/24/gIQAMx2JOQ_story.html" target="_blank">Thomas said</a> that he believes the Federal government has grown out of control, citing the infringement of rights, liberty and property among the reasons for his frustration. In fairness, Thomas made clear that he believe the fault lies with both parties and said that this was a difficult and individual decision.</div><div style="text-align: center;">As fans sound off on the internet and through other media, we're curious to hear what COSMOpolitique readers think. Should Thomas have taken his issues to the president or was his message heard loud and clear? </tbody></table><div style="text-align: center;">I can appreciate a man in uniform. I can appreciate a good George Lucas movie. I can also appreciate an Action/ Adventure/ Drama-historical-war film lionizing some of the greatest heroes of the American military since minutemen. What I cannot appreciate it the "fun fact" that this weekend's silver screen release <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0485985/" target="_blank">"Red Tails"</a> had been put on the back-burner since 1988 because no major studio would fund the project based on the belief that an all black cast would be "unmarketable".</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><b>I'm confused. This isn't the 1860's or the 1950's right? </b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">For those of you who didn't have the good fortune of taking a African American history course in college (something I highly recommend), the Tuskegee Airmen who are featured in this film were the first African American military aviators in the United States armed forces. During a time when Jim Crow laws ruled the South with <i>de jure</i> segregation, the members of the 332nd Fighter Group and 447th Bombardment Group braved their country's racial segregation during World War II to maintain an impressive escort record and be nationally recognized with Congressional Gold Medals.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Now that the history lesson is over, can someone please explain to me how anyone could ignore that <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuskegee_Airmen#Legacy_and_honors" target="_blank">"despite these adversities, they trained and flew with distinction"</a> and fought with purpose for a country that wasn't willing to fight for them? As an American, I am disappointed in the job we have done as a society to recognize heroes such as these and with that, I urge you to do your part and <a href="http://www.fandango.com/" target="_blank">see "Red Tails" at a theater near you</a>. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Seeing something like this? Here's why:</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div style="text-align: center;">If you're a high school student studying for midterms, this is just not your week. Come tomorrow (or today), you will find that you're out of luck when it comes to your favorite online encyclopedia; turns out Wikipedia is going on vacation.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">You're probably thinking, "what the @#$%!?!?!" but don't fret, it's for the greater good. </div><div style="text-align: center;">In protest of anti-piracy legislation making its way through Congress, Wikipedia is making itself a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacrificial_lamb" target="_blank">"sacrificial lamb"</a> of sorts to advocate against the proposed new tools for censorship. The popular informational resource joins companies such as Google and Facebook in protest and will disable its English version for 24 hours.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">What's the big deal?!</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: center;">The big deal is this, "If passed, <a href="http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2012/01/17/wikipedia_to_be_blacked_out_over_anti_piracy_bill/?p1=Upbox_links" target="_blank">this legislation</a> will harm the free and open Internet and bring about new tools for censorship of international websites inside the United States," the Wikimedia foundation said. With supporters from the film and music industry concerned over the frequency at which their products and services are taken advantage of, the concept of intellectual property becomes a significant argument. However, opponents of the proposed legislation have built their cause around issues relating to free speech and privacy. Security on the internet has been a developing topic as social media and many businesses convert to virtual engagement.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Wikipedia has made an appeal to users and supporters of their message to contact members of Congress citing movements like the Arab Spring to press their point. They also mentioned their dissatisfaction with their need to make such a statement by barring users for 24 hours. Jay Walsh, spokesperson for Wikimedia was quoted in an article by Sarah Skidmore on Boston.com saying, "Wikipedia is about being open. We are not about shutting down and protesting. It's not a muscle that is normally flexed."</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Countries like China and North Korea are severely monitored by their governments. (China even goes so far as to censor specific keywords in search engines!) While the United States is unlikely to go so far, how far is too far? </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Are you with Wikipedia or against? We want to see some free expression in action and hear your thoughts. </tbody></table>In light of the reason fashionable favorites (and faux pas) as awards season begins, we thought we'd explore our wild side as 2012 gives us a new year to explore with our favorite kind of print: Animal!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">Taking another tip from the beloved Ms. Nina Garcia, today's focus is on the necessity and future of animal print in 2012. While it makes the cut for Ms. Garcia's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/One-Hundred-Guide-Pieces-Stylish/dp/0061664618" target="_blank">list of the most important pieces</a> every woman should have in her closet, its certainly a daring choice for those who are not as likely to take fashion risks. However, as Nina says, "the truly fashionable are always daring and never dull. They are willing to run with the leopards, the cheetahs, the zebras" and willing we are. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div>But how do we celebrate the concrete jungles we inhabit without making our fashion credibility extinct? Start small. Animal print accessories are bold and slightly dangerous while still looking chic.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WjTNjKL44bU/TxTXSItJWTI/AAAAAAAAAHw/4Gg8BmdOh3g/s1600/y.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WjTNjKL44bU/TxTXSItJWTI/AAAAAAAAAHw/4Gg8BmdOh3g/s400/y.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
We loved the <a href="http://fashionbinge.blogspot.com/2008/03/rawr-animal-print-accessories.html" target="_blank">examples we saw on Fashion Binge</a> but we're sure you can be trusted with the mission of finding your own favorites as long as you follow the card-NINA-l rules as you shop:<br />
<div style="text-align: left;"></div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b>Buying a print with pedigree. </b>This is the best way to avoid looking garish. There are items that you can save money on. This should not be one of them.</li>
<li><b>Wear only one piece at a time. </b>Any more than that and you will look like fashion roadkill.</li>
<li><b>Keep everything else simple, even severe. </b>Pair the print with neutral colors. If you keep everything else classic, the print will carry itself.</li>
<li><b>Keep the colors muted. </b>Less is more, but none gets you nowhere!</li>
</ul><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

(Especially if saving money was one of your resolutions.) But what if we said that there was a great way to spend it on yourself and turn it into a once-in-a-lifetime trip? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Well, <b>if you like traveling and music</b>, you've come to the right blog.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> As early as January, the 2012 music festivals have begun to gain momentum and everywhere from Miami to Indio and Vail Valley to San Bernadino is hosting one! With our quick 2012 festival guide, we're sure you'll find the perfect excuse to gather some friends and make it an unforgettable trip.</div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>March 2-4: <b>Snowball Fest</b>, <i>Vail Valley, Colorado </i>Due to the rapidly approaching date of this show, we suggest grabbing the $160 passes sooner rather than later. For fans of Afroman, Bag Raiders and Crushendo (formerly Slim Thugz), <a href="http://lineup.snowballmusicfestival.com/" target="_blank">this year's line-up</a> will make you thankful you worked so hard this year. And if that doesn't do it, then the 6,000 acres of snow for scenery certainly will! </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>March 3: <b>Cyprus Hill Smokeout</b>, <i>San Bernadino, California </i>Despite its declaration as a music festival and medicinal marijuana expo, don't let that stop you from this "mind opening" experience. The <a href="http://smokeoutfestival.com/" target="_blank">promotional video</a> on their website, features clips from previous shows and a massive audience and the line-up boasts such acts as The Dirty Heads and Wiz Khalifa. With over two dozen acts, GA tickets for $86 and plenty of hemp-related shopping, we suggest packing your car now. (And don't forget to pack lots of snacks!) </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>March 9-18: <b>SXSW</b>, <i>Austin, Texas </i>After doing our homework, the (approximately) 90 stages at SXSW really got us excited. If that wasn't enough, this event doubles as a film festival! <a href="http://sxsw.com/schedule" target="_blank">SXSW's schedule of events</a> will keep you busy everyday which is why registration for their entrance packages (known as "badges") is especially important. Prices range from $750 to $1195 until February 10 and not that we don't think bands like The Ettes (Nashville), Fanzine (London, UK) and THE GRANNIES (San Francisco) are worth it, but planning for an event as large as this can take a lot of time, especially when it comes to finding accommodations!</li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>March 23-25: <b>ULTRA Music Festival</b>, <i>Miami, Florida </i>We envy those of you who have spring break during this time and don't need to run to Human Resources with a vacation request. Take the advice from an older and wiser generation: DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW. The website blasts the foreboding words "SOLD OUT" but as with any event, if you can find tickets online, spare no cost. This year's lineup includes acts like Hardwell, Jack Beats and Kraftwerk but Loco Dice, Miike Snow and New Order will also be present for "the biggest dance music event in America". As if we haven't dropped enough names already, <a href="http://www.ultramusicfestival.com/lineup/" target="_blank">the full list of performers</a> is available on their website as well as a <a href="http://www.ultramusicfestival.com/photo-gallery/" target="_blank">gallery from last year</a> and countdown to the 2012 show.</li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>April 13-15 & 20-22: <b>Coachella</b>, <i>Indio, California </i>After seeing some snapshots of "Coachella cuties" from last year's show, stars like Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio and Kate Moss put tickets to this event on our wish lists. While traditional tickets are unavailable, there seems to be some <a href="http://www.coachella.com/festival-passes" target="_blank">fine print</a> that might gain you entry. Our motivation? Acts such as Pulp, Radiohead and Santogold are just a few of the things on our "most wanted" lists this year. Let us know if you get into what is known as California's flagship festival, we'll want to see pictures!</li>
</ul><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/aWz6MkiKGFE?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><div><br />

It seems that all prospects and big ideas you thought you had are just as frozen as black ice. But never fear! COSMOpolitique to the rescue!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">After reading an article in <a href="http://www.boston.com/" target="_blank">The Boston Globe</a>, we decided to explore a new concept of "winternships" and how and why you should try to score one:</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><b><u>Winternship</u></b>: <i>(noun)</i> "A winter internship undertaken by students facing a bleak job market and shrinking starting salaries to bolster resumes and <a href="http://www.bostonglobe.com/arts/2012/01/05/more-students-spending-winter-break-winternships/HmiI3apSNzzBEpw4mWkF3M/story.html" target="_blank">land a job</a>".</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
</span></div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Be open to a variety of positions:</b> Like an audition for American Idol, its not likely you're going to skyrocket to fame and fortune on your first try. If you start out with big ideas, you'll be able to narrow your focus once you have some experience in your field. We recommend the legislature as a nice place to start if you're willing to be flexible and learn basic office skills. Political experience, even if its just taking in the environment, is an easily translatable public-sector opportunity to get to know how government works and can be applied to almost any field of study. Also, lucky for you, we're going into campaign season so many community leaders will be gearing up to put together teams of college-educated individuals to carry them to the finish line. Could it be you?</span></li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Accept and <u>learn</u> from an <u>entry-level</u> position:</b> The best part is, that while you may be faced with some grunt work at first, in 2009 "nearly 90% of Goldman [Sach]'s new hires were former interns." There's no risk with demoting yourself to the status of an underaged and applying for internships. They <b>want</b> to teach you so we suggest sucking up the little-to-no pay and practicing your coffee ordering skills. </span></li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b>Work like a grown-up:</b> While your time is undoubtedly valuable, you're not going to get any work experience planted on a sofa in sweatpants. (Sorry, but life really is more comfortable on the employment line.) Imagine Facebook but real life; that's what networking in an office is all about! Whether your winternship lasts six weeks or six months, the relationships you form with people may prove useful in the long run. How you're remembered professionally will affect whether or not mention your name when a position opens up or when your cubicle-mate's brother's girlfriend's cousin's aunt (twice removed) is looking for someone JUST LIKE YOU to hire!</li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b>Get motivated:</b> At some point, someone is going to want to know what you did out of college and while saying you read <a href="http://www.facebook.com/COSMOpolitique" target="_blank">COSMOpolitique</a>, make us feel all warm and fuzzy, its not likely to earn you very many points with a future employer. (But we didn't say none!) Before you apply, think about what your goals are and what you're looking to get out of the experience. Keep this list with you to help you stay motivated and to help express your interest in special projects.</li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b>Start getting beauty sleep</b>: Most grown-ups we know are 9 to 5-ers so why should you be any different? Don't watch that extra episode of Dexter and hit the hay earlier so you can be awake and alert earlier. Believe it or not, if you're up and productive at earlier hours, you'll feel more accomplished later in the day!</li>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">It's what we're all thinking...</td></tr>
</tbody></table><b>Drink less alcohol. Eat healthy food. Get a better job. Get fit.</b> </div><div style="text-align: center;">How long is your list of resolutions for the year ahead?</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">If you're anything like <a href="http://proactivechange.com/resolutions/statistics.htm" target="_blank">the statistics</a> we found, you're more than likely to give up on your ambitious goals anytime after your first month. We're not saying that to discourage you. In fact, we're hoping you're up for the challenge and, if so, we have a few pointers that just might give you the confidence you need to finally make those resolutions stick!</div><ol style="text-align: left;"><li><b>Make your goals realistic and attainable</b>: If your plan is to lose weight, plan a realistic goal for yourself. You can always add more to a task later but by starting out small you can aim for big, overall success.</li>
<li><b>Work with a friend</b>: Sometimes its easier to work in a team. This is an effective way to reach goals on a timeline when you are part of an encouraging group. (It's like having you're own built-in cheerleaders or personal trainers!) Your successes will be their successes and you can work collaboratively on the parts of your goal that might prove to be more difficult.</li>
<li><b>Rewarding yourself is okay</b>: Every so often, a little compensation for a job well done is in order. But, be careful! Stay away from "days off" and instead do less. In lieu of completely giving up for a day, allow yourself to take a mini-vacation and do something that makes you happy but maybe temporarily takes the focus off the one task you're trying to accomplish. You might even feel better about being able to get back on track once you've taken a short break!</li>
<li><b>Give yourself credit</b>: Some goals (like quitting cigarettes) are harder to achieve than basic and simple adjustments to a lifestyle. When dealing with goals that encourage the breaking of habits, sometimes its better to set intervals of scaling back bad behavior or adverse habits and also more manageable. You'll feel more accomplished if you can accomplish pieces of your plan instead of building up anxiety when you don't meet your mark.</li>
<li><b>Don't give up!</b>: Stay focused. Even if you slip, don't beat yourself up about it. Twelve months is a long time to set and accomplish any given task so while there's room for error, there's also room for success!</li>

In fact, with so much to do in one of the best cities in the world, its easy to forget just how easy planning can be without breaking the bank. And don't feel bad because you just couldn't swing that trip to NYC with your friends. Boston has a celebration all its own that honors the firsts and lasts of everything this holiday.<br />
<div><br />
</div><div>On firstnight.org, <a href="http://www.firstnight.org/blog/fun-facts-about-first-night-boston/" target="_blank">the official website</a> of Boston's annual winter celebration, the facts page boats that "First Night is the oldest and largest New Year's Eve celebration of the arts in North America". However, if you're not a fan of all things artistic, don't fret. With over a million people expected to celebrate this year, there is something in the city for everyone. </div><div><br />
</div><div><u>What to do:</u></div><div style="text-align: left;"><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Beginning at 5:30, <b>the annual holiday procession</b> commences at 5:30 in front of the Hynes Convention Center. If you enjoy the pomp and circumstance of a holiday parade, grab a spot along Boylston St., or where Charles St. meets Beacon St. This is a great family activity and for those who might want to call it an early night.</li>
<li>While considered art, the annual <b>display of ice sculptures</b> is an entertaining way to spend time between city adventures. This year's collection will include five masterpieces illuminated by a variety of lights. Weighing between 30 and 45 tons, each sculpture is impressive and might motivate you to take on a hands-on project in the coming year!</li>
<li>Got plans during the day but want to see the year out with a colorful explosion of delight? Don't miss the <b>midnight fireworks over Boston Harbor</b>! The Zambelli family, famous in the firework business for a little under a century, has been making the skyline sparkle in more than 18,000 cities alone for nationwide July 4th celebrations. We can't wait to see what they have up their sleeves this year!</li>
<li>If you're <b>looking for a party</b>, websites like <a href="http://www.clubzone.com/nye1/boston-new-years-eve.html?gclid=CJW07PTXqK0CFcZM4AodzB1iQA" target="_blank">Clubzone.com</a> have full listings of the festivities going down at venues like the Seaport Hotel and Club Mantra. (But hurry because these can sell out up until the day before!) Ticket prices may include amenities such as bottle service, hors d'oeuvres and champagne tots at midnight.</li>
<li>For the <b>comedian</b> (and comedienne alike), <b>acts</b> such as Dan Kelly and John Pinette, will be performing at venues across the city. Their events, as well as others, can be found on <a href="http://calendar.boston.com/search?swhat=new+year%27s+eve&swhen=&swhere=Boston&srad=60&st=event&svt=text&search=true&srss=" target="_blank">Boston.com's calendar page</a>.</li>
<li>Despite the expected increase in visitors to the city this weekend, there are still plenty of ways and places to <b>steal a moment or two of romance</b> on this holiday. Thanks to this guide we found, you can sweep your significant other off their feet at midday or midnight if you check out Boston.com's <a href="http://www.boston.com/travel/explorene/specials/romantic/best_places_to_kiss_in_boston/" target="_blank">"Best Places to Kiss" gallery</a>.</li>
<li>However, while some chose Boston because we know how to "do it big", some prefer the quaintness of <b>a simple dinner out</b> and watching Dick Clark in the comfort of their own home. We can understand that but don't miss out the celebrating entirely! From Aura Restaurant to The Beehive, there's a festive spot for everyone! (Reservations recommended!)</li>

<i>2011. Ah, what a year. From newsworthy arrests to downgraded stocks, it's been a wild ride and not one we're likely to forget. Although it's not over yet, we thought we'd recognize the few news articles and hot topics that really made our year memorable.</i><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">MOST WANTED- <b>James 'Whitey' Bulger</b></span>: After 16 years on the F.B.I.'s "Most Wanted list", "Whitey" was captured this year along with his girlfriend in Santa Monica, California. Wanted for several charges (including racketeering, murder, conspiracy and narcotics distribution), the 82 year old former mobster is spending his days awaiting trial in Plymouth, Massachusetts. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">MOST CHANGED SINCE <strike>FRESHMAN YEAR</strike> THEIR CAREER TOOK OFF- <b>Lindsay Lohan</b></span>: If there's one thing that Lindsay Lohan never learned, it's that life is supposed to get better after high school. Maybe if she'd had the experience of facing mean girls instead of becoming one, everything from her minor car crashes in 2004 to her "accidental" jewelry theft earlier this year would be but a mere figment of the imagination. However, money can't buy you happiness and Lindsay has sure seen her fair share of unhappy moments this year from her brief stints in jail to community service hours and court dates.</li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">BEST SMILE- <b>Lea Michele</b></span>: She's the actress that puts the "glee" into the FOX channel sensation and wows the red carpet on a regular basis. Since 2009, Lea Michele has become a Hollywood sweetheart with her warm smile and advocacy for gay and animal rights. As good as 2011 was for Lea, we have a feeling that 2012 has already had an early and sparkly beginning with her role in the "New Year's Eve" motion picture.</li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">BEST SUPPORTING <strike>ACTRESS</strike> WEDDING PARTY MEMBER- <b>'The grumpy flower girl'</b></span>: It may have been Duchess Kate Middleton's sister Pippa who "ruled" as most glamorous royal sister on April 29th but 3-year-old Lady Grace van Cutsem stole the show with her flower-framed pout atop Buckingham Palace's balcony. Not a fan of military fly-bys or her godfather's romantic moments with his new bride, its hard to not think of the royal nuptials without remembering Lady Grace's little face peering over the balcony.</li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">MOST INFLUENTIAL- <b>The Arab Spring</b></span>: While the world credits the United States with taking down one of the most evil men in history this year, its the Arab Spring movement that sparked <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/interactive/2011/mar/22/middle-east-protest-interactive-timeline" target="_blank">a revolution</a> around the world. December 2010 marked the beginning of what would be a new order for the Arab world from Algeria to Yemen and since that time, the world has kept a watchful eye on the shift of power in the Middle East.</li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">CLASS CLOWN- <b>Charlie Sheen</b></span>: Remember that kid in class who always made the jokes but took them just far enough that it made you uneasy? We're guessing that Charlie Sheen was <b>that</b> kid minus the strong-willed (or -handed) adult to steer him clear of the wildness that would later set in. Gone are the days when we might follow the words of Jewel and "learn love from Charlie Sheen" but at least we're a year from his 2011 fall from grace. According to IMDb, there are a few projects in post-production featuring Mr. Sheen that might just "Catchfire"and aren't "Rated X".</li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">BEST DRESSED- <b>Fashion's Night Out</b></span>: In 2011, 18 countries participated in what was the biggest international exchange in the fashion industry. Cities from Australia to the United States hosted fashion shows and other gala events that were sponsored by industry businesses and designers such as VOGUE International. The informational website boasts "with stores in more than 250 cities across the country and more than 1,000 retailers in NYC alone, FNO was bigger and better than ever before". (Want to get ahead so as not to miss the festivities and year-round promotions? Visit <a href="http://fashionsnightout.com/fno-worldwide" target="_blank">here</a>! )</li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">MOST OUTSPOKEN- <b>London riots</b></span>: Another national movement that took the media by storm this year was the rioting in London. Stemming from a police reaction to a peaceful protest march on August 6th, widespread looting and arson plagued the borough of Tottenham for four straight days and led to the 3,100 arrests, five deaths and over a dozen injuries. Those who heeded the travel warnings of the several countries that issued them, and explored the riots through the media would discover riots described by one journalist as "the worst disturbances of their kind since the 1995 Brixton riots". If nothing else, this year was a lively one and we think that the London riots, while possibly "shameful", brought awareness to social issues that otherwise might have gone unnoticed.</li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED- <b>Beyonce</b></span>: Just when it seems that things can't get any better for the "Queen Bee", Ms. Sasha Fierce acquired new management (herself), recorded and released a new album ("4") and announced that she and husband, Jay-Z, are expecting their first child this year. Additionally, Ms. Knowles was identified by Forbes as the eighth "Best Paid Celebrity Under 30" in June. With all that under her belt, the hard-working, soon-to-be mama has set herself up for a very comfortable 2012.</li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">LIFE OF THE PARTY- <b>Rebecca Black</b></span>: Okay, we kid, but seriously, we give this girl props. Who knew that a song so bad could be such a sensation? With 167 million hits, the (un)popular party tune inspired everything from hashtags to video spoofs (and unfortunately a few death threats). Thanks to YouTube and various social media outlets, 'Friday' took off like a 14 year old after last period on, well, a 'Friday'...</li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED POSTHUMOUSLY- <b>Amy Winehouse</b></span>: On July 26th the world bid farewell to possibly one of the last true soul crooners of the modern era. After her struggle with relationships, substance abuse, mental health issues, violence, legal troubles and respiratory problems, Amy Winehouse succumbed to the demons that had plagued her career and personal life. However, as fans across the world saw their "Tears Dry", <a href="http://www.amywinehousefoundation.co.uk/about" target="_blank">a charitable organization</a> was assembled in her memory "to support charitable activities [around the world]...that provide help... to young people...who are in need by reason of ill health, disability, financial disadvantage or addiction". This organization helps to heal the "Body and Soul" of those in need and helps the spirit of Amy live on with one of the most honorable claims to fame there is.</li>

The holiday season is the time of year when we think to reach a little deeper into our pockets for those "extra gifts" and to go above and beyond...but are they making a difference in our local or global communities? Ask BLAST, (a on-line</span> lifestyle/ tech magazine for the "Generation Y and X crowd" who dabble in pop culture, MTV, Nintendo and student loans) who caught our attention this morning when it gave voice to a young member of the Occupy Boston camp.<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">The five question interview featuring 21-year old Nicole Sullivan is intriguing because it puts young people in touch with a narrative that could be coming from any one of their friends. She responds to questions with a strong sense of identity noting her membership to the queer community, the city of Somerville and local community college. She is a self-titled "activist" and has been involved in campaigns for more than just financial reform. She describes h<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">er perspective as one "from both sides of the fence" through her illustration of her family life and education and admits that,</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 20px;"> "once I lost the backbone of wealth, it did not matter how hard I worked. There is no way to win."</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">With Massachusetts reportedly having the third highest per capita personal income of $50, 735 in 2008 and a significant number of struggling citizens sprinkled throughout communities across the state, the concern of a dwindling middle class becomes a very real issue. Occupy Boston is not just a branch of a movement that targets the financial capital of the world, its a revolution to change the communities that subscribe to a "fend for yourself" attitude simply because they have the financial means to do so.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 1px;"><img height="266" id="il_fi" src="http://www.globalpost.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/gp3_full_article/occupy_boston_sign.jpg" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-color: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; padding-bottom: 8px; padding-left: 8px; padding-right: 8px; padding-top: 8px;" width="400" /></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Ms. Sullivan's involvement with the Occupy Boston movement brings hope that young people are still engaged in their communities and will stand up for what they believe (even if its out of desperation). As a community, we must answer the call and support those who are disenfranchised and seek to make the world a better place like Ms. Sullivan. Her efforts, and those of her fellow activists, have not gone unnoticed, thanks to media outlets like BLAST. In fact, their message is loud and clear.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">And in case there was any doubt, Ms. Sullivan is going places, even if its not to the infamous Dewey Square encampment.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
